Matisse in the 30s
Idea & Concept
Henri Matisse’s paintings from the late 1930s served as the inspiration for this poster. The piece approaches Matisse’s art in
a minimal way.
a minimal way.
The iconic cut-outs from The Parakeet and the Mermaid from 1952 served as inspiration for the poster’s thinly drawn organic contours. I went with a bolder, thicker typeface for the font to balance the delicate organic curves. I decided to use a two-layer display to display the many letters in Matisse’s name. I intended to represent and bring to the viewer’s attention the collage work that Matisse produced in his later years by separating his first and last names.
